Big Brown heavy favorite for Preakness

Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown is the prohibitive 1-2 favorite for Saturday's 133rd Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, MD. The colt will face 12 other three-year-olds in the $1 million, 1 3/16 mile race. Owned by IEAH Stables and Paul Pompa Jr., Big Brown is undefeated in four career starts, having won the races by a total of nearly 34 lengths. The three-year-old will again be ridden by Kent Desormeaux and the pair will start from post seven. Desormeaux won the 1998 Preakness aboard Real Quiet.

Potential World Series match-up in May?

They might not be tearing their respective divisions up right now, but both the NY Yankees and NY Mets are expected to be in the thick of the Playoff race come October. The Yankees have struggled throughout the first two and a half months of the season. They currently sit one game under .500 at 20-21 overall, and find themselves 3.5-games in back of the AL East leading Tampa Bay Rays. That’s right, Tampa Bay! As for the Mets, they’ve churned out a winning record thus far compiling a 20-18 SU mark and sit two-games in back of the surprising Florida Marlins for the top spot in the NL East.

NBA Playoff intensity will be turned up a couple notches Friday night when both the Utah Jazz and Cleveland Cavaliers look to avoid elimination in each of their respective series’ with both the Lakers and Celtics. Los Angeles and Boston took 3-2 series leads on Wednesday night as each picked up seven-point home wins, but each failed to cover the spread allowing underdogs to bark in three of the last four overall playoff games played the last two days.

The Los Angeles Lakers are up 2-0 in their best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal versus the Utah Jazz. Los Angeles won both games by double digits to remain perfect in the playoffs at 6-0 straight up and against the spread. Utah has fallen to 4-4 SU and 3-5 ATS.

The 20 horses for this Saturday’s Kentucky Derby have been selected and assigned post positions. Big Brown is the heavy favorite despite coming out of the No. 20 hole, followed by Colonel John (post 10) at +350 and Pyro (post 9) at +500. These are the three horses to beat at Churchill Downs.

The Chicago Cubs are trying to end a century of futility by winning the World Series. At press time, they were off to a good start at 17-10. It looks like competition will be tough, however, in the National League Central. Chicago is tied for the division lead with the 18-11 St. Louis Cardinals.

NASCAR Saturday: The Dan Lowry 400 at Richmond International Raceway

The only NASCAR race on the Sprint Cup schedule named after an essay winner takes place this Saturday at Richmond, where two-time defending Cup champion Jimmie Johnson is the favorite at +500. Johnson swept both races at Richmond last year and finished in the Top 4 in three of his last four events this year, including his first win of the season in Phoenix. Both Phoenix and Richmond are short tracks; the RIR track is especially tiny at three-quarters of a mile.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is having a much better year on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit now that he’s with Hendrick Motorsport. But he still hasn’t taken the checkered flag after eight Cup races. That could all end this Sunday afternoon at Talladega, where Earnhardt is the +400 favorite to take the Aaron’s 499.

There’s little doubt in anyone’s mind that the Boston Celtics are going to sweep the Atlanta Hawks out of the first round of the NBA playoffs. Boston took the first two games of their best-of-seven series at the Garden, easily covering the 15-point spread in both cases. Odds had yet to be posted at press time for Saturday’s Game 3, but the C’s should remain overwhelming favorites in Atlanta.

Being the top seed in the Western Conference isn’t nearly as much of an advantage this year. But the No. 8 Denver Nuggets are still down two games to none going back to Mile High for Saturday’s Game 3. Kobe Bryant had 49 points and 10 assists for the Los Angeles Lakers Wednesday night in a 122-107 victory. L.A. covered as an 8.5-point chalk for the second game in a row.

NBA East Championship Futures

The Eastern Conference still plays second fiddle to the West, but the exodus of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to the Boston Celtics has tipped the balance a little closer to the East. The Celtics have the best record in the NBA at 66-16, and they’re the heavy favorites to win the conference at –350. The 8-seed Atlanta Hawks (37-45) are little competition in the first round at +6500.
