NBA Playoffs: L.A. Lakers at Denver, Game 3

Being the top seed in the Western Conference isn’t nearly as much of an advantage this year. But the No. 8 Denver Nuggets are still down two games to none going back to Mile High for Saturday’s Game 3. Kobe Bryant had 49 points and 10 assists for the Los Angeles Lakers Wednesday night in a 122-107 victory. L.A. covered as an 8.5-point chalk for the second game in a row.

Nuggets coach George Karl pulled out all the stops Wednesday, taking point guard Anthony Carter out of the starting lineup and putting in small forward Linas Kleiza. The experiment was a success. Carter was limited to nine scoreless minutes off the bench; Kleiza shot 5-for-10 and added eight rebounds with Allen Iverson (31 points, six assists) running the show. Denver also got a better game out of center Marcus Camby, who was embarrassed in the opener. Camby grabbed 17 boards with four blocks and cut his turnovers from four to two.

With Nene (groin) coming back for Denver and Ronny Turiaf (tonsillitis) missing the game for Los Angeles, the Nuggets had reason to think their strong frontline could prevail. And it did for a while. The Nuggets withstood Bryant’s offense, got Lamar Odom in foul trouble and went up 68-67 in the third before the game got away from them.

Turiaf is expected in Denver for Game 3, although he’s been sick all week and might not put up much resistance Saturday. Taking his defensive effort out of the equation wasn’t enough to push the final score over the posted total of 230, up from 224.5 in Game 1.

Game 3 goes Saturday at 5:30 pm ET, with TNT on hand for the action.
